JF016E valve body on the TRANSMESUN test bench, part numbers stamped on the casting

Quick answer. The JF016E (RE0F10D, CVT8) parts people actually order carry four number families: the valve body 31705-28X0A / 28X0B / 28X0C / 28X0D plus the newer 31705-28X2B supersession; the complete-assembly case stamp 31020-70X9C / 70X9D / 70X9E (Rogue Sport and X-Trail); the pushbelt 901074; and the internal filter 31728-28X0A, which the JF016E and JF017E share. The letter suffix on a 31705 number is a casting revision, not a different part class — but Jatco ran more than one casting inside the same model years, so the case stamp beats the year plate every time.

Every week a rebuild shop emails us a number like 31705-28X0B and asks whether it matches the unit on their bench. Nine times out of ten the number is right and the question underneath it is the real one: does the casting revision in my crate match the casting revision this seller shipped? That is a numbers question, and it deserves a numbers answer. This page collects every JF016E part number we rely on in the workshop, shows which ones supersede which, and flags the numbers circulating on marketplace listings that do not belong to this transmission at all.

This is the fourth article in our JF016E cluster, after the complete technical guide, the applications-by-year chart and the fault-code guide. Where those pages explain behavior, this one is built for the moment you already know what you need and just have to order it without a round-trip of wrong crates.

01How to read a Nissan part number on a JF016E

Nissan part numbers follow a strict grammar, and once you can parse it, half the fitment arguments on marketplace listings dissolve on their own.

SegmentExampleWhat it means
Group code31705Control valve body assembly. Any number starting 31705 is a valve body within the Jatco CVT families; the middle digits then separate the families.
Application prefix28XThe CVT8 family — JF016E and JF017E share this prefix. The JF015E uses 3JX (international) or X42 / X429 (US stream); the JF011E uses X42 as well. This is why 31705 alone never identifies a part.
Revision suffixB, D, 2BCasting or revision level. Later letters supersede earlier ones at the parts counter, but a casting change can carry a real dimensional difference, so a 28X0B crate and a 28X0D crate are not automatically the same physical unit.
Assembly code31020-70X9EThe complete transmission assembly number stamped on the case. It encodes the exact hardware combination Jatco built for that vehicle line — casting, final drive, mounting — in one number.

Two habits fall out of this grammar and they will save you more crates than any fitment chart:

First, the prefix beats the group code. Three suppliers can list three different 31705 numbers under one “JF016E valve body” heading; only the prefix (28X vs 3JX vs X42) tells you which family the casting actually belongs to. Second, the case stamp beats the year plate. Model years split across casting revisions — Gearbox Insider's fitment notes for the 28X0B and 28X0D castings show the 2012–2014 and 2013–2017 windows overlapping, with Jatco running more than one casting behind the same model year — so the number stamped on the transmission case is the only identifier that was actually controlled at the factory.

02The complete 31705 valve body list for the JF016E

Here is the valve body number set as it circulates in the trade today, consolidated from the fitment documentation of the two major aftermarket listings and the OE-new suppliers:

NumberCasting windowDocumented fitment
31705-28X0AEarlyInitial CVT8 casting; superseded by later revisions.
31705-28X0B2012–2014 castingAltima 2.5, Murano, Pathfinder, X-Trail, Teana, Elgrand, Infiniti QX60 and JX35, Renault Latitude (Gearbox Insider, City Supply Store, PartsPhoenix listings).
31705-28X0CMid revisionListed in the supersession chain between 28X0B and 28X0D (Sussex Autos cross-reference).
31705-28X0D2013–2017 castingAltima QR25DE 2013–2017, Rogue QR25DE 2014–2017, Rogue Sport 2017–2019 only with CVT assembly 31020-70X9E, X-Trail 2017–2018 only with 31020-70X9C or 70X9D (Gearbox Insider).
31705-28X2BCurrent OE-newOE-new replacement level; Sussex Autos cross-references it against 28X0B/28X0C/28X0D and the no-suffix forms 3170528X0B/3170528X0C.

Two honesty notes before you treat this table as gospel. One: the 28X0C revision is thin in public documentation — it appears in supersession chains but almost no listing documents its own fitment window separately, so we treat it as a passing revision rather than a distinct service part. Two: Sussex Autos marks 28X2B as covering both JF016E and JF017E, while Gearbox Insider explicitly warns that the JF017E valve body from related platforms is not interchangeable with the JF016E one. The likeliest reading is that 28X2B is a CVT8-family casting level that crossed both units at the factory, while the service-level valve bodies remain family-specific — but we cannot prove it from public sources, so if your unit is an RE0F10E (JF017E), demand the case stamp before accepting a 28X2B crate.

The practical path at the counter is the supersession chain: 28X0A → 28X0B → 28X0C → 28X0D → 28X2B. In other words, a 2012 Altima crate ordered today will normally arrive stamped 28X2B, because that is the level the OE channel has consolidated onto. What you must not assume is the reverse — that any 28X2B crate automatically fits any CVT8 case. The casting revisions exist because something changed; the case stamp tells you which revision your unit was born with.

03The 31020 assembly number: the stamp that settles arguments

If you remember one thing from this page, make it this: on the JF016E, the complete-transmission number lives in the 31020 group, and the Rogue Sport and X-Trail fitment documentation leans on it precisely because the year plate lies.

CVT assembly numberDocumented vehicleValve body casting
31020-70X9CX-Trail 2017–201828X0D level
31020-70X9DX-Trail 2017–201828X0D level
31020-70X9ERogue Sport (Juke-based Qashqai platform, US) 2017–201928X0D level

The “only” in Gearbox Insider's fitment line is doing real work: the 2017–2019 Rogue Sport with assembly 70X9E takes the 28X0D casting, and other Rogue Sport builds do not. That single sentence is why our workshop replies to every Rogue Sport valve body inquiry with the same request — photograph the case stamp — before anyone opens a crate. The 28X2B-era listings demand VIN verification at checkout for exactly the same reason: the casting-to-case mapping is not a clean function of model year.

This mirrors the pattern we documented for the JF015E, where the oil pan casting code settled what the year plate could not. Jatco's assembly numbering is the company's own traceability system; Nissan's year plate is a marketing convenience. When the two disagree, believe the assembly number.

04The pushbelt: 901074 and the numbers that do not belong

The JF016E drive belt is sold in the aftermarket under the number 901074, consistent across the major marketplace listings for the Altima 2.5 (2012–2019) and Rogue 2.5 (2014–2018) applications. That number traces to the belt maker's part numbering (Bosch/Continental pushbelt tradition), not to Nissan's 31xxx group, which is why it looks so different from the valve body numbers.

Now the part of this section we enjoy most, because it is a worked example of how to catch a bad listing. One of the best-ranked marketplace belt listings under the headline “901074 … Replace OE RE0F10D JF016E” carries this line in its description: OEM Number: 901074, 901089, RE0F11A, JF016E, JF017E. Three claims are stacked there, and only one survives scrutiny:

Number in the listingWhat it actually isVerdict
901074The JF016E pushbelt, consistent across independent listingsCorrect
901089A different belt number in the same maker's series — the listings that carry it alongside 901074 never document a JF016E fitment for it separatelyUnverified — demand the source
RE0F11AThe Nissan code for the JF017E, the chain-driven, 380 Nm high-torque unit — a different transmission with a fundamentally different power-transfer elementWrong family

Stacking a JF017E code onto a JF016E belt listing is not a typo; it is keyword stuffing — the seller wants the listing to surface for both search streams. The tell is always the same: a single line claiming OEM status for numbers that belong to different transmission codes. Our rule in the workshop: if the belt number list cannot be explained sentence by sentence, the listing's fitment claims get discounted, full stop. The same discipline caught the “stepper motor alignment” instructions pasted onto CVT8 valve body listings in our fault-code article — the CVT8 has no stepper motor; those instructions describe the JF011E.

And the boundary rule from the applications chart still applies here: the JF017E uses a chain, not a pushbelt, rated to 380 Nm against the JF016E's 250 Nm belt. There is no belt-and-chain exchange inside the CVT8 family, whatever the listing says.

05The internal filter: 31728-28X0A and its cross-references

The suction filter inside the JF016E carries the Nissan number 31728-28X0A, and it is one of the few parts on this transmission with a genuinely international cross-reference set, which makes verification easy:

SupplierTheir numberNotes
Nissan OE31728-28X0A (also seen written 3172828X0A without the dash)Service reference across 2012–2016 windows.
VAICOV38-0588 (filter) / V38-0589 (kit with pan gasket V38-0571)Lists JF016E and JF017E; 80,000 km / 5-year change interval.
MahleHX250 / HX418DCross-referenced by VAICO documentation.
ZF5961307416Also cross-referenced; ZF supplies filter media into several CVT families.
Additional Nissan cross31397-1XF0DAppears in the VAICO kit cross-reference; the 1XF prefix is the CVT8 pan/filter hardware group.

Sun Transmissions' application table adds a detail worth knowing before you buy filters in bulk: the 31728-28X0A filter spans JF016E, JF017E and JF018E (RE0F02H) from roughly 2015 onward. So one filter SKU services the belt CVT and both chain CVTs — convenient for stocking, and one more reason the filter number alone proves nothing about which unit is in front of you. For fluid, the JF016E takes NS-3 at roughly 7.9 liters on a full service, as documented in the complete guide.

06Solenoids and sensors: the family with no public OE numbers

Here is an uncomfortable market fact that most parts pages will not say out loud: for the JF016E, the aftermarket solenoid trade has largely stopped printing Nissan numbers. Browse the major listings and the part number field reads “RE0F10D JF016E JF017E CVT8” — a transmission code, not an OE number. One typical kit listing (JCarPart's Serena/Altima application) packs 4 solenoids + 1 control solenoid + 2 pressure sensors with no 31xxx number anywhere in the description.

That is a measurable step down in traceability from the valve body and filter trade, and it has consequences at the bench:

ComponentHow the trade identifies itRisk when ordering
Line / pressure control solenoidsTransmission code only (RE0F10D)JF016E and JF017E listings blur together; pressure ratings differ between the belt and chain units
TCC / lockup solenoid with harnessUsually bundled as a kit pieceSingle-piece sourcing almost always lacks OE traceability
Pressure sensors (2 per unit)Listed as kit contents, not separate SKUsCalibration range rarely documented per unit
Complete solenoid packComes mounted on the valve body assemblyThe reliable path — order the tested assembly, not singles

Nissan's own service documentation points the same direction: the TSB flow for the pressure codes (P0776, P0868 and their siblings) ends in replacing the control valve assembly, not in solenoid-by-solenoid substitution, precisely because the bores and the solenoids wear as a matched system. The marketplace's drift away from OE numbers is sloppy, but the service strategy it accidentally converged on — replace the tested assembly — is actually the one Nissan's engineers recommended. Our own JF016E/JF017E valve body page follows that logic: every unit leaves after a full pressure test on the bench, as one verified assembly.

07Numbers that look JF016E but are not

The CVT8 prefix 28X is shared by two transmissions (JF016E and JF017E), and the neighboring JF011E numbers are one digit-difference away. That is the whole habitat where wrong crates come from. The repeat offenders:

NumberActual homeHow it gets mis-sold
31705-X429B / X429C / X429DJF011E (RE0F10A) valve body, US streamShared 31705 group code; only the prefix differs (X42 vs 28X). Marketplace “CVT valve body” listings routinely mix both.
31705-3JX8A / 3JX5DJF015E (RE0F11A) valve body, international streamThe JF015E is the highest-volume Jatco unit, so its numbers dominate search results and get pasted into JF016E fitment fields.
RE0F11ANissan code for the JF015E (belt) — and, confusingly, also used as the JF017E's code in some US documentation streamsThe only code on this page with a genuine identity crisis in the trade. Belt listings use it for keyword reach; always ask which transmission the seller means.
31705-50X0BJF014E (RE0F10B) — the smaller sibling familySame group code, different application prefix; appears in mixed “Nissan CVT valve body” lots.

One structural note ties this table together: RE0F11A is the number that proves part-number literacy is not optional. Depending on which documentation stream you read, it names either the belt-driven JF015E or the chain-driven JF017E — two transmissions with nothing in common except the brand on the case. When a single code can name two different gearboxes, the casting-level 31705/31020 numbers are the only stable ground, and any seller who cannot state them is working from a catalog, not from units.

08What to photograph before you order — and what we send back

Our workshop's intake for any JF016E inquiry takes two photographs and returns one decision:

  1. The case stamp. The 31020-70X9X assembly number on the transmission case. This settles the casting question for Rogue Sport and X-Trail units outright and anchors everything else.
  2. The valve body ID line. On the range switch, the QR code block — the first line under the code is the JATCO 5-digit part number, as covered in the fault-code article. This is how a used or previously-replaced unit betrays its real casting level even after the pan has been off a dozen times.

What comes back from us: the confirmed 31705 casting level for your stamp, the matching complete valve body assembly (solenoids mounted, pressure-tested on the bench before it goes in the crate), the 31728-28X0A filter and the 901074 belt if the teardown needs them, and — because the casting question and the calibration question are linked — a reminder of the P17F0 calibration-write step from the fault-code guide, since a freshly installed valve body without its written calibration behaves exactly like a failed one. If the teardown turns out to need more than the valve body, the JATCO CVT hub lists what we stock for the whole CVT8 family.

09Frequently asked questions

Is 31705-28X0B the same as 31705-28X0D?

They are revision levels of the same CVT8 valve body family: 28X0B is documented for the 2012–2014 casting window and 28X0D for 2013–2017, with 28X0C between them in the supersession chain. Later letters supersede earlier ones at the parts counter, but a casting revision can carry real dimensional changes, and Jatco ran more than one casting inside overlapping model years. Confirm with the 31020 case stamp, not the model year.

What valve body does a 2017 Rogue Sport use?

The 2017–2019 Rogue Sport documentation specifies the 28X0D-level valve body, but only for units carrying CVT assembly number 31020-70X9E. Other Rogue Sport builds fall outside that fitment line, which is why the case stamp photograph is the first thing we ask for on this model.

Does the 31705-28X2B valve body fit the JF017E too?

One OE-new supplier (Sussex Autos) cross-references 28X2B across JF016E, JF017E, RE0F10D and RE0F10E, while a major aftermarket listing explicitly states the JF017E valve body is not interchangeable with the JF016E one. The likeliest reading is that 28X2B is a casting level that crossed both units at the factory while service-level parts stay family-specific. If your unit is an RE0F10E, demand the case stamp before accepting a 28X2B crate.

Is the 901074 belt the same as 901089?

Some marketplace listings stack both numbers in one OEM line, but none of them documents a separate JF016E fitment for 901089 — the verified JF016E belt number across independent listings is 901074. Treat the double-number line as keyword stuffing until the seller can document the second number's fitment.

What is RE0F11A?

The most confused code in the CVT8 world: in most documentation it is Nissan's code for the JF015E, yet belt and part listings also use it for the JF017E, which is a chain-driven 380 Nm unit. The two transmissions share nothing at the parts level. When a listing cites RE0F11A, ask which transmission the seller means — their answer tells you whether they hold stock or just a catalog.

Does the JF016E and JF017E use the same filter?

Yes — the internal suction filter 31728-28X0A spans the JF016E, JF017E and (from about 2015) JF018E. Cross-references include VAICO V38-0588, Mahle HX250/HX418D and ZF 5961307416, with a roughly 80,000 km service interval. Shared hardware, remember, works both ways: one filter SKU services three units, and the filter number proves nothing about which unit is in front of you.

Why do solenoid listings not show Nissan part numbers?

The JF016E aftermarket solenoid trade identifies parts by transmission code (RE0F10D) rather than OE number, and kits bundle 4 solenoids + 1 control solenoid + 2 pressure sensors with no 31xxx references. It is a traceability downgrade, but it accidentally matches Nissan's own service strategy: the TSB flow replaces the complete control valve assembly rather than chasing individual solenoids, because bores and solenoids wear as a matched system.

How do I confirm a valve body before ordering?

Two photographs: the 31020 assembly number stamped on the transmission case, and the QR code block on the range switch whose first line carries the JATCO 5-digit part number. Send both with your inquiry and the casting level is settled in one message — no year-plate guesswork, no wrong crate. WhatsApp us the photos from the floating button and we will confirm before anything ships.
